most of you will say that i said this because im 21 and do not know how to drive. and it aint even on my list of priorities.i do have my reasons for not knowing how to....and not wanting to learn. i prefer 2 wheels.
but far from me an my driving insecurities, think about it for a second. ever increasing fuel costs, pollution, traffic and congestion, increasing parking prices....and the list goes on.
lets see how much a middle class guy with a toyota would spend in a month;
fuel-400 per day*30=12000(considering that middle class people normally live in eastlands)
parking-250 per day*4 weeks=7000
service-3500
and obvious a lot more that your insurance may cover or not.on average, one can buy a new car every end of year if they didn't own one already.it doesn't make sense to own something you use as much to maintain.
shopping in gikosh.
woi...si us kenyans are so glued to second hand stuff. I'm no exception.i think going to gikosh has lost its allure.where as some years you would go there and get good shoes for say 7sok, shirts for 150 each and a pair of jeans for 7sok, right now thats a dream. even if you get there at 6AM searching for 'camera'. these days a pair of shoes go for 1500 and there's no 'bei ya kuongea' as a lingering statement. a pair of jeans is 1200 and you can get the cheapest shirt at 350.
it may be cheaper still as compared to some stalls, but not when you factor in the mud that is the norm even during drought, brushing shoulders, kleptomaniacs, sweaty armpits and the noise.i love a good market day where i wake up early and throw on some old clothes i stored kwa that kabati above my kawa wardrobe space and my avunjaz...but imezidi. and don't even talk about toi market.the prices target whites.the same ones who sent us the clothes come back to buy them.i wouldn't buy clothes in tao either.there are like a thousand stores and stalls in the CBD but all have the same stock of shoes and clothes. on top of that, they are all fake designer wear from either malaysia ama dubai.so now what to do.i know almost all estates have that kamtumba shop at the shop where a guy ama chick with impeccable taste goes to the market,gets dirty and can still manage to sell the same product at a cheaper price and make profit.but this mosly for men.chicks enjoy gikosh...its their haven. have a look at these...
buying a house
contrary to the status quo that we kenyans and africans live with, buying a house ain't a sound idea. unless you earn say 2.5 million per month. thats justifiable.for the rest of us.its not a good idea.more so now when our life expectancy is 54.9 years.a not so lavish house in a good environment where one can bring up kids and sleep without thinkng of what the buglars plan on poaching next, is around 16Million.yeah....you obviously can't affford this.by the time you save up enough, you will be dead.(remember the life expectancy) the lowest mortgage rates are from barclays and that's 11.9% im sure you have seen the ad where some girl does some back breaking acrobatics.that comes to 17.9mills.
renting such a house is 55,000 a year.so if u were to rent the house, you would live in it for 27 years.by then most of us will be close to that life expectancy.
instead, you can take that 18mil and invest it in something with some returns.who will be better off eventually?
